THINKING ARCHITECTURALLY-CHAPTER 5: THE IDEA OF STRUCTURE AS ORDER

-structure = dealing with how the loads and forces on and in a building are resolved.
structure does not only deal with resolving forces, it also deals with form.
- successful enviroment = structural good sense and rationality as well as aesthetic good sense and judgment ,form and structural issues are the bases of making a building = develop ways to deal with then.
- 3 types of structures = solid - walls act as both the enclosing and the supporting elements.
skeletal - framework which supports all the loads.
surface - wall and roof act as both the enclosing and supporting structure.
- structure resides in form = form and structure go hand in hand and influence each other.
beauty = harmony of parts as reflected in proportion and luminosity.
             - it is not merely  based on aesthetics but in every detailed aspect of constuction and design = the structure, form, technology and detailing, even simplicity best designed is beauty.
- with structuring - one has to provide adequate support for each element, ensure stability and adequate connections between these elements.
- stability =  the ability of the structure to resist overall movement.
 - ribs of the gothic cathedral = aesthetically pleasing and technically strong support = be innovative in designing = incorporate structure and framework as part of the design.
concepts to consider =  thrust, bending and loads.
- develop proper sense of structure = evolving building based on structural good sense rather than making forms that stand up structurally yet are structurally absurd.

as a student i need to work with form as part of structure, neither dominates. be aware of technical developments, constructional techniques and new materials. i have to think before designing.....!

"the planet cannot afford mindless form making for its own sake...the costs are to great.....!"
