HOUSE TZANEEN
BY ORA JOUBERT
this for me it one of the most innovative timber constructed buildings to be designed and built.
it is simple and to the point...Ora is an inspiration.the aesthetics is extremely pleasing.
the use of walls of different materials and functions..well thought our concept and design has been excellently executed. thank you Ora.

ROBBEN ISLAND
my first visit to robben island did not start or end well. the boat trips were a nightmare. the wind was blowing in all directions and it was raining and cold. this did not help at all as i realise that i was sea sick. yet the experience of this remote location was indeed worthwhile. robben island is a land on its own and its architecture expresses just that, in its technology, vernacular architecture, orentation and mainly materials. it was a breath of fresh air.

this is a muslim momument of a famous prophet. the main materials used was their own quary stone which the prisoners dug up

this is the only school on the island, the architecture reminded me of gothic architecture to an extend

this is a typical house on the island. open space use of a combination of architectural styles , i feel that it was inspired by early cape town architecture

this was the caves and area in which the prisoners spend many of their time digging the quary for the buildings and even after the buildings had been built they continued to dig as punishment. this digging cause many illnesses such as eye problems because of the chemicals and the reflection of the sun. in the middle of the area is a pill of different types of stones, different shapes, colours and sizes , this stands as a monument for democracy in our country.

this is the tower at the prison, indicating the materials use and the aesthetics

one of the doors to the prison, the scale of protection and security, even the technology of having to open and close the area. the size of the stone.

THE CBD OF CAPE TOWN
i was going to the bathroom one day at work and walked passed one of the windows as always but this time i stopped and looked throught the window. i was truly amazed as i have seen cape town many times but not in this manner, not at this view, been high up and looking beyond. i thought how did this all come about , the level of intelligence, design and planning. this all took place many years ago yet look at what had been accomplished and here we are just building on  the history instead of creating our own history.

AROUND AND ABOUT CAPE TOWN
I HAVE LIVES IN CAPE TOWN FOR 20 YEARS YET I HARDLY LOOK UP TO SEE THE BEAUTY OF THE BUILDINGS ,AND I CALL MYSELF AND ARCHITECTURAL STUDENT...SHAME ON ME
BUT THIS HAS CHANGE...I WALK WITH MY HEAD HELD HIGH AND EXPLORE WHAT CAPE TOWN HAS TO OFFER.
