Start of a terrible week. I have been working on the staircase drawing for too long now and when my boss finally wanted to see my work, everything was a complete mess, too many mistakes. I need a holiday..! But all this was my own doing; I was too focused on other things and not really looking at my work. I need to focus on my drawing skills and learn from previous mistakes and also from my good drawings.
Well my week went on at this dramatic pace for some days, making mistakes here and there and everywhere and I was so angry at myself for most of the week, but that had to stop and finally within this week my staircase drawing were done and dusted and off with the tender documents..YHO!
Interesting though, I was given a task which then seemed meaningless which was to design a post box for a particular pier. I thought ok, that’s easy and extremely small but I went ahead and well I had to dig up some information/advice. I went from searching for post box, calling manufacturers and speaking to them and emailing them. This was indeed fun, interacting with other professionals and working on something so realistically - I LOVE ARCHITECTURE. Getting a suitable post box and drawing it in, sending drawings to the manufacturer to make final amendments, this was it.
THUS MY DRAMATIC WEEK ENDED IN DRAMA...!

HELPFUL EXPLORING
Week of exploring: This week I started with an interesting drawing= the engineer's drawing of the new addition and staircase for the new addition taking place. I was surprisingly quick to understand it and transfer it to an architectural drawing. 3D models fro details are extremly helpful as one is able to visually see and note what is realy happening when constructing, thus when drawing one is able to produce a much more effective drawing that can be understood clearer. My boss in couraged me to start on a 3D model of the steel and timber staircase, which was indeed helpful.
My funny moment or should I say blonde moment was when I assumed I was expected to draw the balustrade on plan even though it had a turn to it an dwas at different angles. Just picture me, sitting in front of the screen with my weird frown, trying to figure it out...Wow!
My boss went for a meeting with the clients concerning the new addition and come back with some changes. What I enjoyed was the whole office team work we had to making those changes. We had a short meeting whereby she delegated work and spoke about teh changes and off were to get cracking.
What a fruitful week of jumping from one to the next....
UNTIL NEXT TIME!

ENJOYING MY LEARNING
Well this month, it seems to be a long with the projects dragging on. Things are not settling down, projects are been prolonged with continues changes. Every situation is expected in the professional world, but it is up to the architect to conduct themselves in a professional manner by always been productive and ready for anything.
So this week I worked on the main projects from last week. It is the holidays and a few of our projects are on stand still. This is making things in the office abit quiet.
For one of the project, I started on the outside staircase design. I had to produce 2 types- concrete and timber construction. It was an experience to explore the different materials and their construction methods. I exploerd the construction methods in a small 3d model and a basic isonometric drawing on AutoCAD = this was good for my skills and portfolio, I enjoyed this design and construction solving. At the end of producing 2 types, we chose the concrete staircase due to its cost, I also designed the balustrade using reference of the one just outside our office. Speaking of office, I think I should show you more about my work environment soon, I love the location of the office and even the office layout.
Though the process of the staircase design was fustrating and demanding, I made many mistakes and it was difficult for both myself and my boss, but in the end I did it and it was good.
WHEN YOU LOVE IT, YOU OVERCOME AND ACCOMPLISH...!

ACCOMPLISHING SKILLS
My week began with work from the previous week. Touching up on the drainage section, continuing with the roof waterproof detail and the aluminium works schedules for the domestic project project.
I am understanding that each project needs time within the day, thus I have to work effectively and do what is needed with good quality for each project. My boss gave me a short unexpected test regarding the NBR, finding out information about stairways= one has to be ready and informed about the profession, it may not be to have the information, but to know where and how to get teh information.
As an intern, I understood that there are times, luckily not as much for me in the office that I will have to do the small insignificant jobs of maybe filling in annotations and notes on a drawing. i do not mind, I have to start small and right now I am the one that has to do it.
My highlight for the week was assisting and putting together the site and floor plan for the proposed home for the council submission. It was an accomplishment to have it finalised at the end of the week, I may not have been on point completely but I was content. I worked on all the drawings concerning the latest domestic project. It was good to exercise drainage sections again for a project.
This was a week of small, yet worth while accomplishments...!

POTENTIAL TO GROW
Monday was a good start of the week in the office. I sat in a meeting with Heidi and the quantity surveyor working on the domestic projects. The main focus was the bill of quantities for the new house. It is a huge issue as the next processes of the project can not continue until the finances have been settled. I learnt a new abbreviation in the meeting, GBA= gross building area(the floor area).
I continued working on the drainage section from last week, which was much more successful as I understand it more now. At the end of the day, I started on administration work for the school project, writing up a list of the existing drawings we have received, I created a spread sheet on excel.
Jenna and I went to another site to measure up the existing structure and outside spaces for the new addition we have drawn up. While part of the week I made small changes to one of the domestic projects- this project is complex as the design is changing according to the finances.
My Friday came with a new challenge, drawing up a waterproof detail of a roof . Well learning about waterprooofing, I was able to extend my AutoCAD skills by learning more from Jenna.
It is amazing hoe we as humans have so much potential to gain knowledge everyday.

CLEVER THINKING
Then for the report I carried on to the services section, this I had to start an electrical layout for Alaster Avenue. Here was an interesting challenge, teh report was tricky to comply with having to be clever with my decisions of lighting for each room.
Went on a site visit with Heidi to the beach. This was a project completed some time ago and now the client is looking into add awnings. This gave me a slight view/understanding of how to continue with projects and how to work with other professionals as we had a man working with installing aluminium awnings there to see what could be done.
After I sat in a meeting with Heidi and the client of one of the domestic projects. The discussions were about the Bill of Quantities, the project is higher than the clients budget. It gave me a look of the client and architect relationship and the level of decision making an architect has. While my biggest challenge was at the end of the week, when I tactled a drainage section for a proposed home. Heidi gave me an example to work from but it was much of a head ache and it did not help me much. Though it is best to leave it for Monday so that I could do some reserch during the weekend and going over my tertairy notes.

WEEK OF ACKNOLWEDGEMENT
It was great to have my section acknolwedge this week, my boss wants to use it for the school project and for further projects. What a fun week, I was challenged to a copic and photoshop exercise for the school project. Had messy fun doing that and I still need much practice and development. Abit of administration came my way for a new project. I started a new project file from scratch, showing me the different sections of a project such as admin, drawings, costs, meetings etc. everything needs to be recorded.
I took sometime this week to work on my PSS progress mark 2 project. What an exciting learning challenge. I have gained so much about the professionalism of architecture. Learning the terms, teh conduct, the istitutes and visual for architecter. My boss was enthusiastic to help and loved that we were given such a projects to tackle. As the new PART XA, has been added to teh NBR, it seems that my boss is really engageing me in her learning process of this new section. She recieved a new programme to help her develop a report for regarding this section of the NBR for council submissions and guess what, I have to fill in the report for the Alster Avenue project. I worked firstly on the fenestration section, but I was working from plan to report, hus redesigning the plan and making calculations for the report and drawing up an aluminium works schedule/not a window schedule. I was exposed to terms such as SHGC, orientation, projects, shading, u value, R value, area and glazing etc, what an excitement.
Lets expore even bit of information about our passion.....!!

AFTER PORTFOLIO
Ok, I thought I should go back to give each week a different title....every week is unique..
After handing in my portfolio I thought it would be a clean start. Yet there were a few unfinished projects. This week I went back into the elevatins only to leave it agan, thats how it operated at times in the professional world. Jenna and I are still at our measuring up job.
I started on a new project , they need two facilities and I had to start with the base drawings. Well, we recieved old existing drawings which were in inches and feet. I started converting before I could draw up. This week I got into a stormwater detail, it was a short exercise. I got into some trouble this week, my drawings for the high school, were not up to standard and my boss was not in the office and need them, when she opened my drawings, I had very little even though I thought I had done everything. Thus always do mroe and learn to grow from every project. I am here to gain skills not make a mess, therefore I need to learn and do more.
From my mess up, I learn the importance of looking and visualising things, I have to draw realistically not just as I feel fit. I learnt about line weights and illustrating differences on plan using lines/line weights.
Until the next!!!
